decorative zippers
On Sunday, BF and I went to the zoo. I got a zoo membership with some Christmas money and I was instructed to use it to buy something I want but wouldn't spend my own money on, so I got a fancy membership with free parking, free guests, free train rides...
My hair was inexplicably a tangly MESS Sunday morning. I don't know what was going on, but I just about dunked my head in tangle spray and it still took me a good half hour to get it into shape. So that took up all my getting pretty time!
I really like this jacket, and I think it's adorable. I think it looks better in real life. But what I did not notice when I was trying it on (and didn't even notice until BF pointed it out as we were leaving), was that there are two zippers up the back that don't do anything. Decorative zippers. I really don't like them. But I did like this guy:

Some housekeeping junk
A few things are going on around here.
1) I have tinkered with my feed. If my posts are coming through all wonky in your RSS reader (or coming in twice, or not coming in at all), please let me know! I'm not 100% positive I did everything correctly. If I did do it correctly, you shouldn't notice any difference on your end.
2) I'm selling some clothes on eBay. I have a James Perse dress (a JP size 4, which is way different than regular people sizes - it's more like a 10 or an 8 or something, I have size chart specifics in the listing), a Michael Stars top (one size), and a DimitySO bra set (size 30G/medium). All of these items are NWT and perfectly lovely, they just didn't work out for me and they were final sale items. You can find all my listings here. I also still have some vintage items left in my Etsy shop if you're interested.
3) The $40 Maurice's giveaway ends tomorrow, March 10. If you haven't entered yet, now's the time!

Alice in Wonderland/Champagne Saturday
I wore this on Saturday for a fun day out with BF. I knew we would probably end up seeing Alice in Wonderland, and I couldn't help but get in the spirit of things with an Alice-esque hair bow and a pocketwatchy necklace. (Thanks to BF for taking the pictures, which are so much better and more interesting than the ones I get with my tripod!)
(This top is supposed to puff out at the bottom of the sleeves, but I always subconsciously push it up past my elbows and mess it up. Whoops.)
Have I ever told you how much I hate socks? Because I hate socks. I try to wear fun ones to make the ordeal a little more pleasant, but overall I really don't like wearing them. So I was thrilled that the weather was low 50s and I could go without! But I did need some other layer, so I picked this cropped jacket.
Also, BonBon Rose has started a "game" called Champagne Saturday where you post the outfit you wore and the beverage you had to celebrate the weekend. It wasn't champagne for me this weekend, but Rolling Rock at Zip's before the movie.

showing off my undies
BF has been out of town for a week but he is coming home today! Eeeeeee I'm so excited!
It's a goofy face but it's the clearest photo I got today. Something about my focus was off, apparently.
The yellow + snow leopard combo was inspired by Jen Loves Kev, who wore the reverse a while ago. I wanted to wear my brown boots with this but I wanted it to be clear that I meant to mix brown and black and that it wasn't an accident (since I know some people still thinks that looks weird) so I wore a brown cami right next to the black print.
Also - I have a weird question for you today. How do you guys feel about wearing slips under a skirt with slits? For your consideration:
Usually when I have to resort to this, I try to match the slip color to my skirt or my tights, but I didn't have a half slip long enough in one of these colors today. So I just wore my plain black one. I have a shorter one, but I feared that if I wore it would be suffering from mid-thigh cling like I did the last time I made the mistake of wearing a too-short slip. I figured that a little glimpse of slip was better than thigh cling all day long, but do you guys think this is a bigger deal than I did? Should I have just thought up a different outfit to avoid showing off my undies like this?
Cardi: White House Black Market
Cami: ? (via swap)
Skirt: Ann Taylor Loft
Tights: Old Navy
Boots: Franco Sarto
Necklace: Luxe Deluxe

My Hawaiian best
This past Sunday, I went to a bridal shower. Can I just say right now that I never know how to dress for these things? If I show up in a dress, everyone's in jeans. If I dress down, everyone else is dressed up. Then I feel so out of place which doesn't help when I usually don't know a lot of the women there. Hmpf. Anyway, this shower was particularly hard to dress for because the invitation told me to arrive in my Hawaiian best, but it was still February and there is still snow and ice on the ground and it's hard to be Hawaiian in a climate like that. I stood in my closet for a good ten minutes before I decided on this dress, which I haven't worn in a while but was more "Hawaiian" than the rest of my winter wardrobe because of the flowers. It turns out I wasn't the only one confused - some people were in flip flops and halter tops, some were in grass skirts, some were in jeans and boots and sweaters. We were a crazy fashion mish mash.
(I am bad at taking pictures of my shoes. Sorry about that.)
I added a hair flower too - at first I reached for my pink one but with my new red highlights I am in unknown territory as far as color combos go. So I went for the safer color. Also, I had washed my hair the day before and didn't want to get it wet again, so I thought "ooh a curling iron is a fast and easy fix for boring hair." But I re-discovered why I haven't pulled it out in forever, and that's because it takes forever to do its job (and even then it doesn't do it very well). It's years and years old and I have been getting increasingly frustrated with it because it takes so long, but I didn't realize quite how long until I had it curled at the salon one day and she just went zip-zip-zip and was done faster than I thought was possible. Clearly I need to buy a new one, because I really do love my hair curled. Does anyone have one they love? I'd like not to spend more than $40 because I am cheap. But I'd go a little higher for something totally rave-worthy.
And, not related to anything that has anything to do with bridal showers or clothes, here is my adorable Traci. I couldn't resist taking a picture while I had the camera out.
Dress: Target
Chemise: Banana Republic
Shoes: Hive & Honey
Flower: Social Butterflies

WIN $40 to Spend at Maurice's!
Guys, I have great news. The lovely people at Maurice's have decided to give one lucky Proficiscamur! reader a $40 gift card to use online or in-store! I'm so excited to be giving this away, because you know that Proficiscamur! is pretty heavily based on budget-friendly fashion, and Maurice's fits right in here.
Here they are flat on the ground, not modeled by yours truly:
The Maurice's website describes the Taylor jeans as being relaxed through the hip and thigh, fitted at the knee, and sitting just below the waist. I had never shopped for Maurice's jeans before, so I consulted the size chart to find my size and I think the jeans fit me just as described! In retrospect I think that on my figure I should have gone with a more fitted style like the Laney boot-cuts, but that's no fault of the jeans themselves, just my poor decision-making skills! I also got these jeans in a short length so they would be good for flat shoes. Here they are right out of the package:
I wore them all day, then washed them on a warm/cold cycle and dried them on hot to test them. They didn't shrink or warp at all as far as I could tell, which I appreciated as far as quality goes (especially since I usually air-dry my jeans for fear that they will change shape). Here they are after the laundry:
(While I was taking these pictures I felt like I was 10 years old again - my mom would always make me lift up my shirt like this to make sure my pants fit correctly before we bought them, haha!) I definitely think these stand up to other jeans in this price range, in fact I like them even better because as you know, even a few pairs my slightly more expensive jeans get all baggy and saggy after a few hours, which I hate. I really appreciate a consistent fit, which is what Maurice's delivered.
Now to the even more exciting part - the gift card! Want to win a $40 mini-spree at Maurice's? Here's how to enter:
Mandatory:
1) Leave a comment here and just say whether you would use the gift card in stores or online (it won't affect your chances to win either way, I'm just nosy). In the same comment, leave either the URL of your website where I can easily find your email address, or leave your email address itself. If I can't contact you, you can't win!
Optional:
Get up to three more entries by doing any of the following. For each entry leave a separate comment.
2) Visit Maurices.com and let me know at least one thing that you might buy if you won. Comment with the item name or a link to the item.
3) Become a fan of Maurice's on Facebook and leave a comment here telling me that you did so. (On their Facebook page, you'll also find info on how to score some free jewelry!)
4) Put a link to this contest on your blog or up on Twitter, then leave a comment with a link to your mention.
Good luck to everyone! This contest will close on Wednesday, March 10 at 11:59 PM.
By the way, I obviously can't win this but I couldn't resist playing along anyway and pick what I would get if I was the winner. Here are some of my favorite things from the site:
In celebration of their $29 denim collection, Maurice's sent me a pair to try out. You've seen me wearing them here. I wore them twice to make sure I could give you an informed opinion. First, here are the website photos of the style I chose (Taylor Dark Wash Boot Jean):

(Just so we're all clear, Maurice's isn't paying me for the review above. The gave me the jeans so I could give you my honest opinion and that's what you just read. I just want to make sure you all know I wouldn't pretend to like something I don't just for a review - if I receive something for a review and I don't feel comfortable with it, I let the company know and I don't review it. Well, I tell them that I can review it anyway but that it wouldn't be a favorable review, and no one has taken me up on that offer yet!)

scarf problem
I have a scarf problem. I have a bunch of them - not too many in theory, but too many when you take into account that I barely wear them. Sometimes I'll tie one up in my hair or something (I know I've done it multiple times but this post is the only one I can find right now), but on the whole I don't really incorporate them into my outfits very much. I feel like a scarf tied around my neck looks a little too mature on me, but today I wore one untied and tucked into my cardigan and I thought it really worked.
(My necklace kept jumping in and out of my scarf all day, so it was often hidden under gauzy layers instead of sitting on top!) (And yeah, it's silver colored and the rest of my jewelry is gold colored...but I decided that the little blue pop was worth the metal mixing.)
I wore my new two-finger ring as well. I expected it to be annoying and hard to wear, but in fact I went shopping, had lunch with my grandma, saw a movie, used my phone, and drove all around, and it didn't cause me any problems. The only time it bothered me was when I got on my computer for a second to figure out movie times - typing did not work well at all. Otherwise, I barely noticed that my two fingers were connected.
Cardigan: New York & Co
Cami: Carissa Rose
Jeans: Maurice's (they sent me these jeans to try them out - stay tuned for a review and a giveaway!)
Scarf: Thrifted
Ring & gold studs: Forever 21
Necklace: jewelparlour
